LOCKER03

The Locker installation series is based on sensory deprivation, claustrophobia and the feeling of being paralyzed by third party circumstances.
What happens to the human perception when a trusted place turns into a confined space and every event or signal triggers the senses in unexpected ways? Sight and hearing, originally tools for survival, become the interpreters of what's to be avoided. The Locker series gives descriptions based on true-life experiences without pretending to contain solutions.

HISTORY

As one might assume, Locker 03 is the third in a series of installations that deploy the thematic context of claustrophobia and sensory deprivation. Locker 01 was created for a small, darkened cellar in the catacombs of the Brussels Central Station. It used the spectators vaguely captured image, distorted by the modulations of the soundtrack. Locker 02 was a sound installation in a small, photo booth-like, environment, which was commissioned by Z33, a Cultural Centre in Hasselt, B.
Locker 03 was commissioned by ‘Galerie Jan Dhaese’, an art gallery in Ghent, B, to produce a limited edition, functionally wrapped and designed DVD of 50 numbered copies. The 5.1 (Dolby Surround) soundtrack and PAL standard DVD were presented on a home cinema system. To purchase one of the ltd edition DVD’s, feel free to contact the gallery (www.jandhaese.be)

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Eavesdropper – Yves De Mey started out as a drum’n’bass and breakbeat producer.
After playing extensively throughout Flanders and a few releases he got asked to make a score for “Aars”, a huge theatre play by Het Toneelhuis – Antwerp. One year later, he made the soundtrack for “Scratching the Inner Fields” by Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez.
Since then, Eavesdropper has been very active on different levels; sound installations, scores for dance, theatre, performance and film, sound design for film and commercials, DJ-sets, live gigs and many more.
He also runs the lo profile label Knobsounds and collaborates with Glamor Is Undead.

Visual Kitchen - Visual Kitchen started in the late nineties as a collective that focused on live media mixing and is considered one of the pioneers in the Belgian vj-history. In the early days the main activities aimed for the dance floor, with a residency at the Brussels' Cybertheatre, collaborations with mayor Belgian dance-events (10daysOff, I Love Techno, Groovecity) and a long track record of underground performances (RephlexNight, Seats'nBeats). An 'artist in residency'-status at 'Concertgebouw' in Bruges in 2003 were a turning point in the artistic approach, opening up the horizons towards all kinds of different musicians to play with and acquiring a personal set of semantics in performing. With interpretations of the K.H.Stockhausen score 'Pole für 2' for dual MX50 with feedback or the visual adaptation of the original audiotape that accompanied the 'Laborintus II' opera by L.Berio, they set themselves a new standard. The collaborations with Eavesdropper, also resident, continued and intensified resulting in several forms of collaborations such as the Massive Central collective or the Locker03 DVD/installation.
Through the years the active collective grew smaller and the network of visual artists grew stronger, resulting in a totally different approach nowadays: Only two of the original members (Sam Vanoverschelde & Jurgen Van Gemert) are still active in the organization producing live visuals and audiovisual art in their own right, but also co producing live audiovisual events such as the Cimatics Festival, or act as a service to organizations (such as Pukkelpop).
And there's more to come, future projects involve a DVD label, a vj-booking & -management agency, AV-performances and curating events.

PRESENTATIONS

Next to the ltd. edition DVD, Locker 03 can also be presented as an experimental short for a cinema environment with 5.1 surround capacities. A classic stereo version of the soundtrack is available but is, of course, less impressive then the 5.1-surround version.
Preferably, Locker03 is presented in a dedicated black box-environment with a projection and 5.1-surround system (i.e. a small darkened place with projection and sound installation; for further info please contact us). At this moment, the movie is only available in DVD format, but we’re investigating the possibilities of other formats. Please contact us to check out the possibilities of other audio and video formats in accordance to your venue.
